Re-Fund The Rambler

I believe a newspaper edited and produced by students is a fundamental endeavor on any college campus.

Class of 2014. Support the Gambler, journalism is important.

This is a mistake. Administration please think ethically about this decision. Students will leave. Enrollment will drop. STOP promising student they will have the opportunity to grow here. You have taken away that ability. Your words mean nothing to the students anymore. As an organization we need better leadership and much better decisions.

I graduated from Transylvania in 2011. I had several friends that were closely affiliated with the success and maturation of The Rambler. Politicians now openly threaten journalism and media as "the enemy of the people." Journalism is an increasingly dangerous (https://www.apnews.com/74926f7f5def415ab24c71ab61d9346b) and maligned profession. My partner currently reports for the Courier Journal in Louisville. Though he didn't receive his education from Transylvania, his time at his undergraduate newspaper was critical for his success and skill development. I am ashamed that Transylvania would choose to defund The Rambler. This decision echoes within current political climate in which journalists are devalued, dehumanized, and threatened for their work. Might I remind the executor of this decision of Transylvania's motto: In that light, we pass on the light. Cutting, limiting, and divesting in The Rambler is a choice that is in direct conflict with the sentiment captured by our motto and by the philosophy of liberal arts.

This is a disgusting repression of student freedom of speech which seems to be a recurring theme here at this university.

This is just a form of soft censorship. Keep exposing uncomfortable truths

To defund the Rambler would be a major disservice to the Transylvanian community. I am displeased with this decision and hope someone will fix this immediately.

The Rambler is a service to Transylvania University students, faculty and staff as well as the community at large and beyond! I have personally shared some articles which have subsequently been appreciated around the country and several other countries around the world. Freedom of the Press is a responsibility of this institution!

As an alum, sometimes the only way to see what is actually happening on campus is to read articles posted by The Rambler. It would be unjust to current and former students to cut of this important line of communication.

Especially in times like these, universities make a statement by their funding of a student press on their campus. With no apparent information as to why this decision was reached, I have to support the paper I once wrote and edited for, as it provides a service to its students and community. Due to its size, many important stories on Transy's campus go unreported. The Rambler fills that gap, and sometimes stands as the only highlighter, the only check on power and the only opportunity to raise student voices on certain concerns.

If Transylvania is truly committed to the principles of a liberal arts education - which include critical thinking, articulate expression, and freedom of speech - it stands that the school should be deeply invested in a student-run newspaper providing students the chance to pursue all of the above on their own terms. I am curious to know the rational for defunding the newspaper, as it surely weighs less on the budget of the university than opportunities provided for student personal and career development.

Transy needs the Rambler! Those young men and women work hard to make it a paper of which their fellow students can be proud. Transy is a wonderful school with lots of events - academic and athletic - and much news to communicate. This paper should not only be funded but funding should increase to add reporters to cover this wonderful school and the city of Lexington that belongs to it.

I can point to myself and dozens of other students who have graduated from Transylvania in the past decade who would not have the careers they have today with the foundational experience gained from working on The Rambler. Moreover, I can say with near absolute certainty that the University wouldn't be where it is today--and certainly many people wouldn't be in their current administrative roles--if it weren't for reporting that The Rambler has done in the past decade. The Rambler is a vital campus resource. It provides opportunities for students to find their voice, grow as a writer, learn to question authority and, more pragmatically, build a writing portfolio that can be shared with potential employers and graduate schools. It provides students an outlet to share creative endeavors, communicate events and investigate and question the workings of an institution in which we have all invested. For a university that claims to value diversity of thought, civil discourse and engagement, it's hypocritical to defund the already minuscule support for student journalism. This is an outrage and affront to Transy's history and the students who have poured passion into the legacy of one of the oldest student newspapers in the nation.
