Defunding the main student news source is short sighted and even repressive. The students should not rely on messages from the administration for their information. That breeds resentment and possibly rebellion.

It does not matter in which format media is consumed; those who perform work in the United States are to be paid for their work. Last I checked, Transy was supposed to be better than this; better than the "gig economy", better than "paying in exposure", better than delegitimizing the present form of media consumption - not the future, the present. It is here now.
What does it say about the University's opinion of digital media when it gives less of a tangible value to digital media than it did to print? Why should anyone major in Digital Arts and Media when the University is going to show, through its actions and the words of its leadership, that this field does not have the same monetary value as ancient, tree-killing, globe-warming, humanity-ending newspaper? If this is the opinion the University has of Digital Media, why invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into a program whose field the University itself refuses to compensate? How much more of an obvious example of "set in our ways" does the administration need to provide? You are teaching 18-22 year olds (and the odd adult learner), not pensioners. You are teaching individuals who are independent of traditional corporate media, not the Fox News viewership. This is 2019, not 1969 - the Internet is real and people make money off of it, with and without an education. The digital world is more than media; it is the economy of today.
I wholeheartedly support the transition away from print media; it is 2019, the world is literally on fire, we need all the trees that we can get. However, the University should under no circumstance remove compensation for its staff and students. Nobody works for free in this country.
Take steps forward. Restore full funding for the Rambler. Let's all laugh about this in six months, rather than having to continue to fight for it.

This newspaper allows for students to exercise the same liberal arts education that Transy provides. By taking away the Rambler, it takes away some of my sense of belonging and it takes away my respect that I have gained for Transy. Please think about that when you decide to defund the movements that are starting and evolving within this newspaper, thank you!

I graduated from Transylvania in 2011. I had several friends that were closely affiliated with the success and maturation of The Rambler. My partner currently reports for the Courier Journal and while he did not receive his education from Transylvania, his time at his undergraduate newspaper was critical to his professional development. Transylvania seems to be choosing to reneging on their responsibility to its students to provide a supportive learning environment that encourages constant questioning.
Politicians openly call journalists and media "the enemy of the people." Journalism is a maligned, devalued, and dangerous (https://www.apnews.com/74926f7f5def415ab24c71ab61d9346b) profession. Transylvania's choice to cut, limit, and divest in the Rambler echoes in a current political climate that frequently targets the checks and balances provided by the fourth estate.
Might I remind the executor of this decision that Transylvania's motto is: In that light, we pass on the light. The decision to change the financial structure and administrative support of The Rambler has not been properly or sufficiently justified; it only seeks to limit the ability of the Transylvania community to properly uphold the sentiment set forth by our motto and the philosophy of liberal arts.
