This is shocking! I never participated in Explore as a student, but as a teacher, I have recommended it to my students and have seen a huge improvement in the language skills of the students who have participated. I will no longer recommend this program until something has been done to ensure the safety of my students and to address the problems in the social/ cultural environment discussed above.

I did the Explore program in Montreal in 2011 and there was a man on campus who was going around sexually assaulting women who were in the program and also French students who were taking summer classes. There was nothing on campus for the Explore students regarding this issue and it was sort of something that no one really spoke of except for the Explore students who were commenting on various times that this man made them uncomfortable and spoke to them/touched them inappropriately. I would like to help you with this in any way that I can. I met a local from the same neighbourhood as the school and he told me that men in the area know when the Explore students will be in town and that they purposely target the school as a place to pick up/prey on girls. Again, not something Explore spoke of or warned us about.

This attitude is unacceptable. As a teacher, I would not recommend this program to students without knowing how this issue is resolved.

It is indeed the duty and responsibility of educators and their institutions to establish safe and appropriate learning situations for their students. A system that does not appropriately educate both young men and young women about sexual health and consent should be mandated to do so.

this is an important issue, no woman should be subjected to non consensual sex. No means no. Please do more to protect young women in the university setting.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. I participated in Explore programs twice - many years ago now, and I have no recollection of this kind of thing. We've come a long way - in wrong the direction it seems!

I know people who have participated in this program and I am seething at the thought that such a program trivializes the trauma of rape and date rape drugs. I have recommended that some of my students participate in this program! I feel nothing but horror at the thought that one of them might become a victim due to the poor handling of rape culture by these programs.

This doesn't have to be uncomfortable or weird. It just has to be addressed in a professional manner. It's not about emotions. It's about how rape is a fact in your program and you need to show that it won't be tolerated or trivialized.
