Let an African American artist paint over this racist trash.

Looks like this mural was actually painted to depict a Dutch immigrant (see hat ;) and description on the first link below) but it sounds like the ambiguity was hurtful to some Black residents so still signing to hopefully have it replaced with a more relevant painting

As one of the few African Americans who grew up in Red Hook this has always offended me. In my adult years, I lived in the center of town for two years and literally took alternative routes walking through town just to avoid this nonsense.

Images like this romanticize slavery & days gone by...and ignore the pain and injustice that was behind this image

I always thought this mural was slightly disturbing. I think that at the least it should be expanded on and if the town decides it has to stay put there needs to be a large clear sign acknowledging the town’s Racist & slavery filled past.

I grew up in Red Hook most of life. Given the the state of our nation. I’m asking that this mural be removed.

I don’t think the intent was malicious. But the outcome is problematic. Maybe taking the person out of it entirely might be an option?

Whether or not people want to argue the historical significance of this ‘mural’ this is a completely unnecessary display of an ugly time Ashley Evans RHHS class of 2011
