This mural is historically inaccurate and has no business being in the middle of a town. Murals are meant to celebrate, and there is nothing depicted here that should be celebrated. Take it down! Change it to something better that shows Red Hook is commited to being antiracist!

I grew up in Red Hook and have had an issue with this mural for a few years now. It went even many more years unnoticed until a few of my POC friends pointed it out to me. I regret being blind to this and then for not speaking up about this sooner, but I am doing so now on behalf of my friends who find this mural hurtful. I don’t believe this mural was ever intended to cause any harm, but the image and message it projects are inadvertently causing a problem. If it is hurtful to Red Hook’s black residents (who have already been through enough) then we need to listen to them and re-paint it to reflect the evolving values of this community.
