This is absurd!!! Nothing racist about it is a Dutch woman and it is about the transition from wheat farming to apple farming. Which is what this town was founded on.

I cannot for the life of me imagine that this mural does not keep a lot of people - of whatever skin tone - from spending more time and money in what is otherwise an attractive town.

Red Hook has a lot of reform to do. Take the easiest, tiniest possible step in the right direction here. Then we can start talking about the root of the issues. Why is Red Hook so homogeneous? What can we do do reform our PD to better meet the needs of our citizens, especially BIPOC who are often marginalized and overpoliced?

Hopefully this will spark productive discussion within the community on how red hook can be a welcoming town for everyone particularly black and brown individuals and families.

I've walked by this mural my whole life and it's pretty appalling that I'm only now truly seeing it. That's part of the nature of white privilege, to be able to simply walk by something rather than confront the discomfort inherent in something so clearly problematic.
Just because this mural has been around seemingly forever is no reason to preserve it. That kind of legacy mentality is what keeps some people in Red Hook flying confederate flags. This needs to be owned up to and changed.

Maybe a garden, landscape, abstract, youth collab? ANYTHING else family friendly and current would be awesome.

The current mural romanticises slavery, is abhorrent, and needs to be replaced.
