This should’ve never been put up without context. And now that there is context it really shouldn’t be kept up. I have passed this for YEARS and feeling more uncomfortable in this town than I already do daily.

Imagery like this, without the correct context, serves to alienate and remind BIPoC of centuries of mistreatment at the hands of white slave owners. While imagery such as this is important to reflecting and understanding the past, such imagery should be relegated to museums, where the appropriate context for it can be given, and where individuals that are still suffering from racism today are not subjected to it unwillingly.

There is absolutely no harm done to residents to have this repainted. If there is even the POTENTIAL for harm done for some to leave it up, please... take it down.

It is a privately owned building. It should be at the discretion of the building owner and only the building owner. I have lived in the area 35 years and it is lovely art work. Next you will be calling for the removal of the murals in Pine Plains. They are historical and well done art work. This craziness needs to stop! Remember, no body made you move here. We love our history in the beautiful Hudson Valley.

Our community should be willing to take the necessary steps to make sure that black, indigenous, and other peoples of color feel safe, respected, welcomed, and fairly represented. Changing this mural is a good start.

It really does need to go. After reading the attachment, it certainly seems like it was an odd choice to begin with. Lots of other historical murals that don’t offend ANYONE that can be there that don’t hearken back to an egregious moment in history. Please replace this mural.

We must find a way to celebrate our history without the broad offense that this mural causes. Perhaps a group of local artists representing all ethnic groups could be formed to select and produce a more appropriate mural.
I never saw this mural in the way others have. We are living through extraordinary times in which we are looking at things through new eyes and in a new direction. I applaud the movement; if we continue on this path, we as a country and society will be better for it.

Take it down. Build something more intersectional y’all! Black, Indigenous, POC and trans folx should be hired. We should be supporting black and brown folx especially in our gentrified neighborhood.

There are so many images to pick from that could celebrate Red Hook’s rich farming history. I hope that people who are awakening to why this is offensive would consider a new image.
