Women should have the right to decide whether to take their husbands name or not. The statement saying that taking your husbands name make you his property is absolutely ridiculous. Being able to share your husbands name with your children and spouse creates unity among the family.

As a new resident who grew up in the States I was shocked that women aren't allowed to change their name. I want the right to choice!

I want to have the same last name as my husband and our son - I think it is truly sad that it is "forbidden" by law to have the freedom to choose.

There is no question that this law, which may have been considered forward-thinking and empowering to women at the time, is very much neither. Being obliged to keep my maiden name is no less oppressive than being forced to take my husband's name. It also does not protect french names in Quebec as children are receiving hyphenated names and within two generations or so, the woman's name has been split off. Empowerment is the right to choose. The couple should be able to choose which name they wish to use going forward in their union. My maiden name was imposed by the rules of the province (the same rules apply today) and further obliging me to keep it is in no way empowering. I want the right to choose, for the couple to decide, if I will take my husband's name going forward. So many other provinces and other countries can do it without excuses of "too much paperwork" and "it gets confusing", why is it Quebec can't manage it. For the appreciation of the strides women have made for generations, the appreciation that marriage is no longer an institution of "ownership" but a choice people make (oddly enough, less often in Quebec), please consider the population's interest in allowing a couple the choice to proceed with the same name following their legal union. Thank you.

As a soon to be newlywed, the tradition of taking ones name comes handed down from generations in my family. I remain in Quebec because I enjoy the province. The law mentioned makes it so that I must continue to live a life dis-connected from my new family, to forever have a different last name.

My Fiancée was devastated when she found out about this law. We got engaged three weeks ago, everyday she has been talking about how we are getting married and how she is going to have the same name as me (and our future children ). This was a crushing blow for her, I told her from the start there is no pressure to take my name in fact I didn't even ask her to. She insisted, now after reading the law for myself I am beyond belief. I understand equality and it's been a long fought battle for woman but taking away their right to choose puts women right back where they started on this issue. A Man should not now or ever have the right to force a woman to take his name, so why should the Government have the right to force her not to? If the definition of "equality for women" is the voted group consensus of politician's making her decisions for her in place of her husband then I think we still have a LONG WAY to go on this issue. In fact I think a man and a woman should both have the right to change their names when they get married. When we are born we are born into somebody's family they rise us and teach us the facts of life, once we are grown up we get a job and most of us look for somebody to spend the rest of their lives with. This is what I would call the beginning of their own family and a family should share a name or at least have the choice to. That name should be agreed on between both husband and wife, ether the husband surname, the wife's surname or something else entirely (maybe they both dislike their current surnames). If the refusal to give men and women this basic freedom is cost related by all means send me the bill I would gladly pay the administration fees involved to process the applications and what not, probably a small price to pay for some basic freedom of choice for my future wife and I. I think the least they can do is allow us to get married outside of the province or some other accommodation after all I am Canadian. This is just another re

I feel strongly that a family should have the same family name.
I also believe that the option to change one's name should be available to both men and women.

I feel that women in Quebec should have the choice to either retain their maiden name or take that of their spouse. This law gives women no freedom of choice.

True liberation is giving the woman the OPTION of choosing which name she will use.
