Quebec Spouses' Right to Choose Their Family Name

We will be getting married in a few weeks outside of Quebec. Because we now live in the province, I am unable to have this choice. Even though I am American, getting married in America, I still do not have the choice because I live here now. Collective rights is an archaic belief that leaves the decision of what people want up to the government.

I should be able to use the names I want to.

This law is about my democratic rights and freedoms. All women around the world have a choice to choose what thr last name to adopt after the marriage. It's not about feminism, it's about personal and cultural values. Quebec should give to the women democratic rights!

We have the right to choose for our last name after marriage!!We are not being forced to take our husbands last name, the government of Québec is taking our RIGHTS!

This is a right! All women should be able to choose for themselves..

Quebec says they were giving women equality and freedom by making this law, however they didn't give us a right, they took a right away from us! We should have the right to chose to take our husbands last name or not!

I believe in the right for a woman to be able to choose which name she is going to take after marriage as a posed too taking her rights away.

I think it should be legal to take your partner's name. To keep the tradition going, and to have the same name as your husband/wife and kids, its a sign of union, commitement, and family. Why not let us do it and charge us? it is our right.

I want to be able to change my name when I get married, my parents hyphened my name and it's ridiculously long. I would also want the same last name as my children imagine if I had to give them my last names and my husbands!

I want to have the choice to chose my last name ! We are starting a new family together it is important for me and my family to have the same last name. It is uniting and I don't want my children to have different last names them mine. Every where in the world and Canada I have a freedom of choice , just not in quebec. Even prisoners have the right to change the name .... Not women....

Couples should have a right to make their own choice if they want the same name or not. People say its an equality thing of something like that, but everybody has different reasons why they do or do not want to take the name of their spouse, and yes, I said spouse, not husband, men should be able to decide (as a couple with their wife) to take the woman's name too if they want to. How's that for equality? The option to chose mans last name, woman's last name, or your birth name. Lets be fair shall we?

I was honored to take my husbands last name. It was a choice for me to do so and I choose to. I changed my childrens last name to his when he adopted him. I think if you want true freedom for women let EITHER partner choose if they want to take the man or womans name

I mean. Just look at my last name. Imagine the fate of my children if husband has a long last name. Besides. It should be my right and my choice on whether or not I keep my maiden name. it's more than just a name. It's a symbol of love and unity as a married couple . As a family with kids.. its cultural.. it's my pride and commitment. I just wishes to exercise my right to choose.. for myself.. I am distraught as I wish to take my husband name after marriage..

Quebec was the last province granting voting rights to women back in 1940, I believe. Fast forward to 2015, Quebec prohibits women their civil rights if they want to take on their husband's last name !!! Unbelievable !! In other provinces, as in other countries, the government lets anyone of any sex, change their name for pretty much any reason they wish. I personally find the law beyond ridiculous, especially since it claims to give me rights as a woman while simultaneously taking those rights away. What a contradiction ! So much for freedom of choice. Quebec passed this sexist law not so long ago (in 1981) without consideration for women who wish to continue family traditions, mimicking their children's last names or for whatever personal reasons. This law is nothing more than a means of control and discrimination towards women. If I choose to take my husband's last name, it should be MY choice/MY right and not a law. Furthermore, even if a woman gets married elsewhere, as soon as she steps in Quebec, she is still and only legally recognized by her maiden name alone. There is no way around this and it has to be changed !!! Who would of thought that in this day and age, Quebec’s Civil Code denies spouses’ basic freedom of choice. Yet again, another reason why I am ashamed to be a Quebec resident.
