Law completely outdated. The real woman freedom is to be able to make her own decision by choosing what last name she wants to bear, and not by a bunch of politician (in majority men) or their husbands. If this law wanted initially to set the woman freer, it’s a fail, because Quebecer men call their wives: “ma femme”, which means ‘my woman’, a denomination completely reductive. (See next comment for French version)

My wife's last name was from a detestable father she wishes not to be reminded of and yet she could not even change it to my names because of these dumb rules. Even if we had married in Ontario, she would have been forced to change back. Some freedom *shakes my head*

I'm a relationship anarchist and I don't believe having a primary romantic relationship and then secondary friendships is desirable or normal. That being said, everyone should be able to choose their lifestyle and that includes using your spouse's name if this is what works best for you. Quebec is part of a free country, Canada, after all?

There is something dehumanizing about not being able to have the same name as the rest of your family. It's not about forgetting where you came from, it's about being a strong family unit. Travelling with my daughter makes me nervous because we don't share a "nom de famille". Kind of ironic, isn't it? Embarrassing, Quebec.

It breaks my heart every time I think about this asinine law.

Since when did woman's rights equal taking the right to choose what name they use? Taking away my rights is somehow supposed to empower me? Ridiculous .

As a Quebecer married in Ontario, I am appalled you don't have the right to choose! This law must be amended! Freedom of Choice is a Human Right!

It is my family choice. I want to have the same name as my child. Such as my mom carried mine.

I believe in the traditional way. A woman should have the family name of her husband. However, I am also for the freedom of choice in which a woman chooses to keep her maiden name once married. Legitimize both options please.

I believe women and men should have a right to chose what name they want after marriage. My dream is to have a family with all the same name.

Hello, Does anyone know what the actual status is on this movement and getting the actual civil code updated. What concrete action can I take (or can we collectively take) to bring this to the attention of decision makers? Is there an actual committee in place that is working towards this cause (i.e. who is responsible for the leading the petition)? Amanda

I was married in 1974 and so I was able to use my married name for many things including my license and passport. However, anything to do with the medical system I have to use my maiden name. It's confusing to have your husband and kids all with a different name than you.

I hate the fact that my husband has a different last name than me and that my kids will be raised with a different last name than me. How does this make sense?
