"Wal-Mart and Target have submitted proposals to the City of Lancaster to build stores on two corner lots at 60th St and Ave L. Wal-Mart wants to build a super store on the empty lot across the street from the new homes. Target wants to build a store where Lane Ranch is located. Both stores are directly across the street from Quartz Hill High School. Wal-Mart stores are open 24 hours. Once these stores are built other stores will be enticed to these locations. This will increase traffic congestion, crime and endanger the school children. If you are concerned and would like to prevent the approval of these plans we must act quickly. Volunteers are needed to circulate petitions for signatures to protest the approval of these plans and set up neighborhood meetings to keep everyone abreast of their status. We also need block captains (contact person) to update, coordinate and attend meetings for each block. We can submit our concerns to the City Planning and Development Department, City and Elective Representatives. I contacted Jocelyn Swain who works in the Lancaster Planning and Developement Department. She has provided me with the attached E-Mail. It provides the procedures that must be followed by the stores before they can obtain approval from the city. It is important that you read it. It also shows how we can voice our concerns. Within the next week I would like to set up neighborhood meetings. We need volunteers to act as block captains, circulate petitions, attend meetings, call neighbors and provide assistance. Call me at the number listed below if you want to volunteer. I cannot do this alone. I will act as the initial contact person and prepare a legal petition. Once the block captains and volunteers are identified they can circulate petitions to oppose the plans and obtain signatures, attend meetings, provide assistance and act as contact persons for each block. We all must get involved to prevent these stores from becoming part of the neighborhood and the problems associated with them. Sincerely, Anthony Stith" The above flier/letter was written by Anthony Stith (recopied by Michael). Please make sure you vote in this petition!
