Pipes were supposed to be massed so soldiers could follow their sound into combat. That's also how they are presented at tattoo performance(s). Why change it?

This is a ridiculous change. The Pipe Band is a separate entity while still part of the Regimental Band Company, the same way the Marine Corp is separate from the Navy while still part of the Department of the Navy. While still part of the Department of the Navy, while in a parade they would march as separate units.
All the Tubas are together and all the Pipes should be together. You don't typically mix brass and woodwind, you shouldn't mix the pipes and the brass/woodwinds.
It also looks ridiculous!
