I testified in a court case recently in which I was the expert witness...they lost on the basis of being a financial decision rather than meeting the needs of the client. I think they will be hard pressed to deny this child. patient rights and needs outweigh the financial implications of an insurance company or healthcare facilities. Maybe, just maybe, if those arseholes had just approved it - and kept quiet about it, it would have been a quiet matter instead of it going around the world as a petition. As the grandfather of a child with Norries Disease and a government that did not want to fund his "out-of-country" surgery I can understand a little of what you're going through. Hoping for the best results for Jake.

Jake so deserves this and it's awful he is being denied funding for operation!
While your idea of getting those who smoke/drink/are overweight to pay for their own care seems like a good one in theory, it would be extremely difficult to implement in practice. Also, it would be very difficult to know where to draw the line. The patient with lung cancer because people around them smoked. The patient who drinks because he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after witnessing mass genocide in a World War. The patient who is obese because his parents fed him junk food because that was all they could afford. How do we know for sure that their illness is simply due to their own lifestyle and no other factors, such as genetic influence? Are you still blaming the patient? Would you make them pay for their own treatment? Where do you draw the line and who makes the decision? Unfortunately it is just not so clear cut.
The example of the breast enlargement on the NHS in a girl with depression, on the surface sounds ridiculous when others are being denied treatment. However, I want to play devils advocate as it important to consider all viewpoints. The NHS do not make funding decisions lightly. Say this woman had a genetic disorder that meant she could not produce the necessary hormones for breast development. Other medical treatments had failed. She started to get bullied at school and every day would dread facing her bullies. She started to miss school and her education suffered. The constant bullying and name-calling made her want to commit suicide. Counselling and psychologists do not help and make her feel. She takes a drug overdose. She is sectioned into a mental health hospital indefinitely, where the cost of her inpatient stay increases as the days go by. Who would fund a boob job? It is an extreme example, but we never know the other side of the story do we?
I agree that cuts need to be made in the NHS. At the same time we as patients are demanding more from the NHS than ever. A&E attendances are record high and the system is being pu

Pls dont try and make any excuses for the nhs they can afford to pay for surgery for apoor innocent child that needs it

I think the breast op comment is more about those woman receiving implants as they are not happy with their size, not so much those having reductions due to pain etc. I saw one woman who wanted to be a model so got an NHS boob job as she claimed she was depressed - this can't be justified. If there are cuts to be made it should be those type of things or procedures for the smokers/alcoholics/obese who have brought on conditions by their own actions, not an innocent child with a painful condition. This may be controversial but I think most people would agree! Keep fighting Debbie, jake deserves it x
