This petition is very well written indeed! It should not be rejected as "too political'. It is what public education is all about. We live in a very diverse community and our public school needs to make students of all racial backgrounds feel included. We are fortunate to be a college town with Fort Lewis College. The student body there is overwhelmingly Native American. We need to make people of ALL racial backgrounds feel welcome and included. Discussing past movements including civil rights and voting rights should include discussions of current movements. I have been a teacher for more than thirty years and have always tried to tie history to current events. There is a difference between telling students I do or do not support a movement and simply presenting facts about a situation. There should be nothing controversial about doing this.

Telling teachers what they can teach about current, perceived controversial issues is absurd. Issues that seem controversial today are part of our historic perspective. Every one of these issues has historical roots in past injustices. Should we not teach about the Sand Creek Massacre, Martin Luther King's march on Washington, Rosa Park's bus ride. Modern movements are part of this story. This is a cowardly act by an administration bowing to the community they believe Durango is. This is not what Durango is about. We are not that community. I am a retired school administrator and teacher of more than 30 years. This action by the administration is wrong.

Teach our students about history, past and present. Expose them to both sides of controversial issues. By doing so, you teach critical thinking - the foundation to being a good citizen.

Many people believe ALL Lives Matter. I wish we were at that point. Black lives and others with dark skin are discriminated against. Our school system should be the exception and make ALL LIVES MATTER.

Colorado Revised Statutes Title 22. Education 22-1-104 requires that the history and culture of minorities be taught in all Colorado public schools as a requisite for graduation. Is this being taught in 9R schools?
