Please make a plan to acknowledge and discuss racism with your students and let the community know that there is no place for racism in healthy schools and communities. Just because a district doesn’t serve a high proportion of black students does not make this any less important.

It’s time we expressed more gratitude to the majority of the history of this land. The pre-modern practices, original democratic principals and worldviews that rendered the beauty that remains today. We are all here for the beauty, yet our economically driven educational processes have created unprecedented wealth disparities, and imperiled the environment. We must honor the contributions of black and brown people and reinstate them into positions of power that meet or exceed percentages in popular representation, teachers, especially.

The options here are pretty limited:
1. You are actively anti-racist and endorsing this is a no-brainer (probably most everyone who reads this).
2. You might think BLM is about more than equality (do some research, it's ok to evolve).
3. You're a racist (or at best, ok with the status quo because you're in a place of privilege - admittedly, this was me for most of my life. It's not enough to just say "I'm not a racist", let's actively make things better).

Supporting Black lives is not political, it is necessary. Anti-racism is not "aligning ourselves to one movement or another." It is everyone's work and crucial to support student success.

Black Lives Matter is not a controversial political issue it is a human issue for racial equity! This is vital for our youth to not only be aware of but be a part of! Refusing BLM is refusing racial equity!

This proclamation is really important, especially because our superintendent has caused great harm to families of color in the district and relied on gaslighting to avoid accountability for that harm. If he can’t do the work, the board needs to step in and do the work for him.
