Wait it out! I suggest placing job ads at area colleges looking for new teachers. Start next year In late September to further neuter the union. This is not 1950. If they don't like the terms offered then they should resign.

Unions used to stand for something in this country, it meant people shouldn't have to waste their lives working in harsh conditions whilst meeting in poverty, now its a power hungry institution. My old Middle School Science Teacher said people like him are the reason why kids aren't working in coal mines. How pathetic

I personally love so many of our teachers. However, I'm not convinced they are being given complete and accurate information from their union leaders. Our teachers are not underpaid. Their compensation package is quite generous compared to the private sector and teachers in other districts and states. I sincerely hope the teachers will realize this fact plus note the great support they receive from parents and PTA/booster groups who constantly contribute towards coaches' salaries, sports equipment or technology purchases for the classroom.

Bear with me here, but I have a different approach to the situation. At this point, we all know the facts, we understand the finances, and it's overwhelmingly clear that the financial demands of the union are ridiculous. We don't really need to argue those points anymore. Supporting the school boards is the first step in resolving the strike on our terms. The next step is determining how to take the power back from the teachers. How do we do that you ask? It's a tough nut to crack and requires some creative thinking. Their power lies is the ability to strike. They feel the disruption in our lives will be strong enough that we and the board will cave to their demands. How can we change this? It's clear that we are on a path for a 21 day strike right now, followed by the 11 day strike later on in the academic year. What we need to plan for is next year. I suggest that we urge the school board to alter next year's academic calendar such that they can't strike. Start school at the latest possible date with no planned vacation days ending on the date required by law to fit in 180 days. In that scenario, no work stoppage would be possible by the PTFT. Think about it - if it's going to happen anyway due to the teacher's striking - why not put them on our terms. If we have a defined school calendar, residents can plan their lives accordingly. Support staff can plan their lives accordingly. Seniors that are applying to college can plan accordingly. If we have a plan, they don't have a plan. #checkmatePTFT. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section. If I get enough support, we can go to the board with our suggestions. If there are some legal hurdles to this, please let me know what they are - I searched the PA education laws and could not find any regulations governing start dates of school - only the end dates. We are willing to wait. Thank you to the Board and the District Office Administrators for working diligently to present a fair and equitable contract to the teachers. I appreciate the fact that you have made concessions in the hope of avoiding a strike, it is unfortunate that I have not heard of any concessions from the Union. Given the research I have done on surrounding district's contract's , I don't see what is not "fair and reasonable" with your proposal. You have my support and thank you.

I support the school board's decision to wait. Our kids miss going to school, but we'll do what we can. We use the same online tools from home like "First in Math" that they use at school.
