As consumers of your directory, we petition to have the published editorial from July 1, 2020 written by Thomas G. Plante Ph.D., ABPP“Vilifying "Karens" May Diminish Us All” publicly revoked. As a community of healers including psychologists, therapists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatrists, we stand in support of equity, cultural competency, and social justice. As a country that continues to heal from being born out of white supremacy, it is imperative that we are represented as a community who supports and firmly uplifts marginalized populations, particularly those who identify as BIPOC in this historic time. This editorial illustrates the deeply embedded toxin of blind white privilege. It is this ongoing unawareness that is at the core of the systematic and institutionalized racism and oppression of our country. If this concept is foreign to you at this point due to your own unchecked white privilege, it is crucial that you educate yourself on this as a company that would like to represent our community.

We demand the removal of this article with a statement recognizing its harm to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. We further request a replacement editorial from a member of the BIPOC community as a means to amplify the voices that have been oppressed for hundreds of years in this country. Without such actions taking place, we hereby withdraw our membership from your directory and any further publications you provide.)

Sincerely,

Updates

While I understand the piece at simple face value, where is the maturity and understanding of the complexity of these social issues presented? Living by the "Golden Rule" is a bit like being colorblind. Please reconsider your stance on this perspective.

The recent article written by Dr. Thomas Plante is offensive to me as a woman of color and therapist. The fact that you run this shows you have no pulse on the Black and brown community and it’s experience with systemic racism. I will be canceling my listing with you.

As a clinical social worker and psychology today member I am appalled that PT would have published something that misses the entire point of systematic racism, which is what is often being called out in posts about “Karen’s”. Do Better, PT.

Black lives are literally at risk by Karens who intentionally seek to cause harm by calling the police on Black people living. That should be the story. I will gladly withdraw my membership from this directory if this demand is not met.

I urge Psychology Today to take a critical look at their content, to retract and/or respond to problematic content already posted, and to commit to an active, anti-racist stance for all future content, both online and in magazine form.

Although I understand the point of view the writer of the article attempts to make I think the article is latent with White fragility, and overt use of his platform to advocate for his cause while taking away focus from anti-Black racism to the experiences of White women.

This article is oppressive, racist gas-lighting.
