As a parent of a High School Student and a technology worker who serves institutional customers- I have been aware of the inequities caused by the lack of internet access and needy families being unable to afford internet access in the home. The glaring need for funding the digital divide for not only education but the poorer members of our communities in general has been completely laid bare by the COVID 19 crisis.

The infrastructure is just not where it needs to be in rural Arkansas. Funding devices is not going to matter AT ALL if students still can't get connected due to lack of supporting infrastructure. This needs to be addressed.

This is a very important issue for K-12 Education. My schools have switched to Distance Learning but Parents don't have Internet Access or the appropriate Latops and Computers.

In rural Kansas, this is essential. With the Governors Executive Order closing all schools, our district was struggling getting all students quality internet connectivity. Our rural communities and rural farmers are the students that deserve and need to have equitable connectivity.

As a CTO, I'm being asked to find money to fund the connectivity of our most vulnerable populations. If the current situation is not the wake-up call needed to address underserved populations and elevate the need for connectivity for all to the same level as safe drinking water and electricity, then I'm not sure what a real wake-up call might look like.

I am a retired CTO from public education in California. I have seen over 35 years in my career the inequity in providing at home internet access for many of our students both in California and across the nation. I was responsible for filing e-rate from the first year it was available, yet the at-home piece has never been addressed through Category 1 or 2. This pandemic is yet another wakeup call as to the most needy children trying to access curriculum from home. Please see that adequate funding is available for our students.
