On the morning of April 10th there was a horrible tragedy in Jackson Square. One of the artists that sets up there was attacked and beaten badly as he was setting up for a day of work. The front and back of his head were beaten in and he was rushed to the hospital where he has had surgery. The last I heard he was in ICU. The officers who responded to the scene did not even classify it as a crime scene and are not even running any sort of investigation! They even made horrid comments about his character. He is a dutiful father and husband, a dear friend and a wonderful artist... This should have NEVER HAPPENED. The Jackson Square artists are considered a huge draw for New Orleans tourists and they should have more support and protection from NOPD. The artists there are renowned world wide as an attraction and visited by thousands every weekend. They pay city taxes and fees just to set up in Jackson Square. The city takes their money, yet fails to protect or even respond or investigate this tragedy. We are organizing to raise funds to help pay for medical costs and to get NOPD to provide patrol for artists in the early morning when they are setting up. Please support this cause and sign this petition.

I have been spending my mornings at the square watching my friends set up their displays with a new and heavy fear. The stories I keep hearing from all of you confirm that our artists are being neglected by the very people paid to keep this city safe. I am currently working to secure a meeting with local officials to demand the patrols we were promised.

Seeing this level of support brings me to tears because it proves that my friend is not alone in this fight for justice. This public momentum makes it impossible for the department to keep ignoring what happened that morning.

Why isnt there a police presence at that time? Its common sense! They are there every single day and the city just turns a blind eye.

This is a disgrace. The city takes their permit money but leaves them to get beat up when they're just trying to earn a living. NOPD needs to do their jobs.

Total incompetence by the police yet again. Praying for his family.

Heartbreaking. Those artists are what make the square special. They deserve to be safe while setting up. Hope he recovers soon.
