Protect West High's American Sign Language Program

Please don't take opportunities away from kids.

Mrs Poll is an amazing teacher and passionate about ASL. ASL being offered in high school is the first in the salt lake school district. I am an alumni and I’ve experienced first hand how amazing the language is and how I’ve been able to use it in my current life and how it connects people so much. Whenever I tell someone I was able to take it in high school they told me how amazing and lucky I was, this is such a unique and amazing thing for students to have the opportunity to learn. Do not give up on your students.

ASL isn't a foreign language. It's the language many of our own people speak because they CANNOT speak English. It's more important than Spanish, the second most used language in America, because Spanish speakers can learn to speak English. The deaf and hard of hearing community cannot. ASL should be defended when the English program is defended. For many in our communities, it's the same thing.

ASL is a class I would have loved to take in high school, as it would have enabled me to communicate with my deaf family members. I think it’s beneficial for the school to keep the ASL program as a way to spread awareness and education.

Please save this program! It is a useful skill for students and provides transition opportunities for those interested in a career using it. There is a shortage of sign language interpreters.

ASL is such an integral part of accessibility, this class allows for an insight and understanding into deaf culture, creating acceptance for something that can be shamed. ASL is a beautiful language that can not and should not be shunned.

Yes please have student take this

American Sign Language should be a required course imo. My son took asl while at west and we have seen people literally cry when they realized someone can speak to them. At the very least let kids choose to learn it. We are a better world when we can communicate with each other.

I work at Utah School for the Deaf and Blind. A couple of my students attend the Deaf side of the school and we rely on ASL interpreters to communicate with our students. Having high school students learn ASL is setting them up for success to have a high demand career.

As a parent of a child who takes ASL, PLEASE do not cut ASL. This program develops language and empathy skills. We need this program!

If students are not able to communicate via ASL, 1.5 billion people over the world, will not be able to communicate to this person. Taking away ASL would be just as bad as taking away French or Spanish. There are more people deaf or hard of hearing than there are that speak French or Spanish combined.

In conclusion, taking away American Sign Language would hurt the students of west high’s futures and lives.

This is a great way to keep bright minds active aside from being inclusive to those who have hearing loss or hearing damage.
