I went to ASL at a different school for 3 years and it completely changed my life! I loved being able to learn about another culture and being able to understand people around me. ASL is such an important thing to learn! Do not take this amazing opportunity away from future students who need to know ASL and the amazing community and culture that learning ASL offers!

As a member of the Deaf community, I believe it essential to preserve ASL programs in High schools. It is a vital pipeline for developing interest in ASL for future interpreters.

My attendance of ASL 1-4 is why I have such a strong understanding of Deaf culture and why I can fluently communicate with deaf individuals, even though it’s been two decades since I graduated. The hearing are at risk of becoming deaf, but the deaf, even with all the technological and medical advancements we have, cannot become hearing. Taking away the opportunity to create language accessibility for hearing kids to interact with their peers (both mainstreamed within the school or otherwise within the community) now, and preparing them for the possibility of needing access to a visual language if they lose their hearing in the future, is the opposite of why public education exists. Keeping this program supports accessibility and academic excellence within the school and community.
