Protect West High's American Sign Language Program

My niece Emily Barnard has benefited from this program. I know the ripple effect of understanding the hearing impaired is far reaching. Please do all you can to keep this program alive and well.

ASL helps learn another language, opens doors that lead to bright futures, break down communication barriers that exist in the world around us without the need for traveling. ASL also provides students with understanding in their own language. It helps them with facial expressions and reading emotions in others. ASL teaches a language, but along the way students develop skills of communication in their own language simultaneously.

Don’t take it away!

ASL is a language students will remember because of the connections it makes in their brains. Spanish, yes, because they hear it. Other than that, the other languages don't stay .

This language has helped me immensely in my career and if I had not been able to learn it in high-school I would've had a much harder time learning it!

This program was three of my best years at West. Don’t give it up.

If you cut this program, you cut off the people who need it to communicate. None of my children are deaf, but we found it exceptionally valuable.

I took asl 1,2, and 3. I couldn’t take 4 which really made me sad. I don’t want other people to not miss ASL. Please do not get rid of it. It’s not just teaching a language, they teach an entire culture. One that is not thought about much.

I think every child should learn sign language

I remember taking ASL at West when I went and how much of an impact it had especially since I have been in the medical field years later. It is a language worth saving and keeping to let students learn!!

I teach at CNJJHS. In a student survey I conducted of about 60 of my students, if the students could add a class or club to the school, except for e-sports, more students wanted ASL added than any other language. Also, people across the US “speak” ASL. ASL services have been needed at many large gatherings I’ve attended. Also, it’s a hands on class that would engage many students in a good way—learning a new language while better coping with ADHD or just the normal teenage need to move the body.

It seems ludicrous to take something so popular and so well-attended away. I know Mrs Poll personally and know how dedicated she is to her students and this program. Please don’t take it away from these students.

As a mother of a Deaf child and an educator in the Rose Park community, please keep ASL thriving!

I took 4 years of ASL at West High, which have literally changed my life. From having a Deaf partner to multiple opportunities made possible through the skills and history learned in these classes, the ASL program played a critical role in my life and the lives of so many others.
