As a gender nonconforming person and a member of the St. Louis community, I’m appalled by these attacks on the Trans, Non-binary, and gender nonconforming members of our community. In a country whose greatest virtue is supposedly freedom, and in a state with a slew of lax gun laws enabling folks to hurt others, Missouri has chosen the paternalist route - a strategy they say is reserved for Democrats - and have “protected” MO’s trans folks from what, necessary medical attention, peace of mind, and their own bodily autonomy? To tell consenting adults they cannot seek medical treatment simply because of their gender is clear gender discrimination; and this decision - so easy to make if it in no way impacts you - will negatively impact those affected in terribly painful and life threatening ways that MO lawmakers would never allow to happen for themselves or even their families. Clearly, this is not about freedom, or any other virtue publicly touted by the Republican right. In fact, this is more directly and quite obviously about control. This is about the world “changing” in ways some lawmakers don’t understand, a grasp to right the world before it topples, and the Republican lawmakers somehow end up NOT on top. But the truth is, they never had control over things, so they can’t be losing it. The truth is, trans and non binary and gender nonconforming people have always existed, whether or not lawmakers were so concerned with themselves that they didn’t notice. The LGBTQ+ community, as a whole, has been offering each other TRUE protection (from Republicans and bigots, not their medicine), alongside providing community, meals and clothes, work assistance, mental health assistance, and medical care. THE LGBTQIA+ community has been doing your job for you, in ways you can’t imagine, better than you even possibly could. It has been well documented that gender affirming care has a major impact on trans people's lives and leads to a massive decrease in depression and suicidal ideation. Banning gender affirming care for not only children but adults as well and depressed people will only lead to a uptick in suicides and self harm for transpeople. If you believe we live in the land of the free then let people be free to do what makes them safe and happy.

This horrifying act barely attempts to present a rational justification for imposing enormous burdens on the private lives of many thousands of Missourians. In fact, there is no justification; it's motivated simply by cruelty and a desire to oppress and divide. We can't tolerate this kind of attack on the vulnerable and marginalized. Who will they come for next?

TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS! Gender affirming care is for EVERYONE, whether you are transgender or cisgender. It is quite literally a violation of the freedom of trans people to take away their healthcare.

My older child is mid transition and is the happiest, most at ease, they have ever been. At age 23 i believe they are capable of knowing what is right for them. Stopping mid treatment would be physically, emotionally, and psychologically devastating.
