I have worked in the camera department on jobs without a DIT and the workload for the camera department becomes too hectic. Quality of the work environment degrades, concentration is split, and the product suffers.

Many reasons why this is an absolute must on Set. Let's start with 1) DP and Director 2) Hard drive = FILM 3

An important position in today's film set. Protect them as you would any other member of the camera dept

It's outrageous that with what we pay for representation we have to fill petitions like this.

As a person fortunate enough to work in and head depts on movies, I can attest to the ABSOLUTE IMPORTANCE of having a person to ask questions about continuity, color balance in makeup applications, etc. loss of this human interaction for vanities and many other depts is detrimental. This industry has already been destroyed by too many ridiculous mistakes in technologies, don't make this one as well.

As a Loader/Digital Utility I hate being asked to do things that fall into the DIT area.

This isn't just a union issue. Many non-union productions in smaller markets have PAs or even Staff interns handling data and not using DITs at all, especially when situations necessitate it, like multiple or different camera systems in use. And if you think it stops at drag-and-drop, I beg to differ, you can bet they're also messing with color and camera settings as well. Sadly as technology advances, there will be those who look to replace ALL aspects of what a DIT does witha "magic box." that is built around presets or on the model of social networking, democritizing the manipulation of data and varying the DP's creation to a degree and multitude that is not only wasteful, but utterly pointless.

This is a real problem, not just for DITs losing work, but us loaders that are become expected to color, sync and transcode but for a loader rate. That doesn even count also assisting AC's by running gear and moving village!

Cameras are now computers, and follow Moores Law. Every two years cameras will double in their capacity. Let's not be short sighted, but aware that the position is there to guide towards standards both in the field and in implementation in workflow. Both HDR imaging, and Rec 2020 color space are on the horizon.

Digital is not synonoumous with easier. It requires adequate staffing by the technicians who are qualified to operate the gear. We need to make mandatory staffing positions for 2nd's, Loaders, and DITs.
