I have been an active member in Local 600 for over 4 years. During that time I have seen the position of DIT change, in many instances the core responsibilities that fell under me have been delegated to 2nd ACs and Loaders. This has all happened to the detriment of the Camera Department as a whole. Everyone has specific tasks and responsibilities required by their position in the service of the DP and to the maintenance of the integrity of the image. When other members of the Camera Department are required to focus their on skills on tasks that fall outside their expertise it's a detriment to the department as a whole.

Some camera rental houses are providing the Pluto Box. An external color management device that can recall sixteen preloaded "looks". I know of one vendor stating that they felt that there was no violation to DITs because the Pluto can operate free of a laptop. This may be true part of the time, but who loads these Pluto Boxes ? Who selects the "looks" ? And more importantly, who maintains them? Earlier this Fall Mr. Poster's Letter addressed the need to prevent "Vendors" from providing services that fall under Camera Department Responsibilities.

It's about time!! I'm sick of productions not hiring DITs and then expecting the Loader to bring a download station with the newest technologies for $50 a week. It's hurting everyone!!
