It's about time we created a petition for this ongoing problem as DIT's are slowly evaporating in television.

The DIT position is an extremely important position. How many times have we had a producer or director look at a monitor displaying log, and ask is this how it's going to look? The DIT provides those above the line employees, actors, and the art department with an idea how it will look. They also provide post or whomever is doing the transcoding the LUTs I design on set so that the dalies, look the way the director and I have previously decided on. Imagine a rough edit shown to execs in log only.... Come on!

This crew position is so necessary to maintain the art and craft of cinematography. Look at it this way, if it is done right the DIT can save a production tens of thousands of dollars.

In the end cutting this position will cost productions more. They are stepping over dollars to pick up dimes. The technology of cameras is growing at an increasingly faster rates and will only continue to do so. The idea that productions do not need to have a camera (computer) expert on set is ignorant. In addition DITs can provide services such as coloring, transcoding and archiving on set which provides immediate feedback to Directors, DPs and Producers as well as a large cost savings from it occurring in post production.

As a feature film DP, I depend on my DIT's for their expertise. I can't imagine doing my job effectively without a trained professional in that position.
