DITs are crucial to modern digital workflows and not having one puts undue pressure on the rest of the camera department. Their expertise is invaluable, and much needed on set.

Just last week, I saved a production $40,000 in lost footage by catching an AC's mistake with camera settings. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of data I've recovered for productions that didn't have a DIT to tell them to back up to multiple drives. Not to mention the time both of my back up drives failed on set at the same time (a bug caused by OSX exfat drivers) and I had to sit there and figure out how to recover, again, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of footage (which I did). Think an AC or 2nd AC would have time for that? I'm in indi production and haven't moved up to the big leagues yet, but any shoot that cuts corners on a real DIT isn't a real shoot. Everything's always fine until it isn't.

This position is invaluable. The DIT saves an absorbinant amount in post production.

DIT's are the Lab and have a necessary function. I have seen various scenarios play out on set where production has tried to cut costs in this area and every time it has lead to either lost footage, overexposed/underexposed rushes, incorrect setting on camera, cost of running into overtime and various others. If you don't have the budget don't shoot the film, its quiet simple.

Yes, lets stand up for the DIT position and not degrade quality for budget.
