Lesley, The existing standards where created by Pilates Professionals all of which were fully comprehensive instructors who had been teaching for well over 10 years and with most allot longer and even with the help of the person who brought Pilates into the UK. You can not discredit the original work that was done by this group , now it is time to help Pilates grow and not destroy it and the professions of people already teaching as your group is trying to do by bringing in your own new standards based on a small groups opinion instead of an industries opinion.

Nothing is being done to deregulate the existing qualifications but rather to protect it from suggested changes put forward by a minority
Precision in instruction is what is important. Yoga as many variations allowing a broader suitably generally for it's clients. we need this same flexibility for our Pilates students depending on their personal physical needs.

As a Body Control Pilates Teacher you will have had a strong education and training both in Body Control Pilates and the generic information from our standards. Not everyone will have had the same opportunities and there are many worldwide school operating in the UK who can offer a similar choice. Have a read at this article. It may help . Please see page 11 http://www.ehfa.eu.com/sites/ehfa.eu.com/files/newsletters/EHFA_Update_December2013.pdf

Jill, I couldn't agree with you more. The early standards however were created at a time when Pilates was not really that well known in the UK but mat classes were springing up a bit like Zumba did a couple of years ago. Now that the method is better known with many studios large and small around the UK and standards are being inter-connected around the world we need better UK regulation. I am an Assessor Verifer, Tutor and have an awarding body for our school so we need to be 100% right when teaching people. The public deserve nothing less and individual people seeking Pilates education and training need to be sure that what they are paying for is properly underpinned by evidence and sound generic standards. There should be a wide choice available. If you have any specific questions please do email [email protected]

Don't think we should be controlled by any one group, Pilates as any other exercise needs to be adapted.

It is essential that Pilates instructors are allowed to evaluate their own training needs and specialisms and decide for themselves who is best to provide that training.
