Hours into his presidency, President Donald Trump signed an executive bill to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement, signed in 2016, is a legally binding, global agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prevent global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit). The United States is among the top countries in greenhouse gas emissions. It released 5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide a year, as of 2021. While you may think that global warming and climate change are distant threats, they are very much here. The ongoing wildfires in California, the drought in Texas, the hurricanes in Florida—all proven to be caused by climate change, according to science-based federal agency NOAA—impact millions of people. Real people lose their jobs, homes, and resources because of climate change (more on the impacts of climate change: https://www.noaa.gov/education/resource-collections/climate/climate-change-impacts) We need to change this.
