We must at all cost protect our history. Do not let them erase our past, if it’s a case of removing historical slave traders then all SYNAGOGUES must be removed as they were the ultimate slave traders, when will it all end.

You can't rewrite history by getting rid of statues, monuments, named buildings etc. Surely the people of this island were also subjects of slavery during the Roman invasion - does this mean Hadrian's Wall should be dumped into the North Sea?

These monuments reflect our culture. The individuals they represent probably, like all of us, had faults but they achieved something outstanding for our City. We should not allow a relatively few hotheads and fanatics to destroy great Sunderland people. The positive thing about all of this is that we are looking at them again, and perhaps we should add a plaque telling everyone a bit more about them, good and bad.

We should be proud of our heritage and history. You cannot change the past but we can enhance the future for everyone regardless of race, creed, colour or religion.

Statues stand as a reminder of how through history we learned and changed . Slave trade was never a good thing but our children look at the statues and learn what was wrong at that period in time and learn to make the future better through that . We in Britain have a rich history some good some bad but as a nation we learn . Protests should be peaceful but some only see it as an excuse to riot and destroy. What ever your colour we all matter in this world

These statues weren't put up because these people were involved in the slave trade, none of the plaques say "here is Joe blog the great racist slave trader", they were put up because of the good that these people did for whatever city their statue stands and should remain, people should stop looking for racism in every nook and cranny.
