Statues that stand commemorate historical events and figures, good and bad, as reminders of historical events which educate our children and grandchildren about history and some of the notable people which passed through this world. I am not by any means condoning racist or derogatory behaviour that diminishes the life of any person. Personally, I think that disgusting behaviour is severely outdated and has no place in society. I invite and rejoice in the variety of religions and cultures I am priviledged to live with, learn about and understand more in depth. But I REFUSE to have statues which commemorate all aspects of history destroyed or taken down. The vandals of the Churchill statue want to get off the internet, crack open a book and think before they act. Whoevers idea to build a statue which commemorates a slaver of all people should have seen how stupid and disrespectful that decision of commemoration was, because it was only a matter of time before that statue was taken down. But to remove ALL statues here on out, I think we have bigger problems to tackle than a bunch of bloody statues. Including why we STILL have to pay for sanitary pads and tampons although those things are needed rather than wanted.

If we tear down statues, should we stop buying anything German or Japonese? No! Do we stop visiting Italy and Roman artefacts around the Europe? No! Why? Because its history, we put it into context and learn from it.
The 21st Century is far different to the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's. It takes time to change, learn and improve. We all Must learn to appreciate each others view, to continue to Learn and improve.

As a resident of Sunderland I resent being dictated to by mob rule. We need to understand why these people and times are to be remembered rather than being removed on a whim.

The BLM mob is clearly intolerant to anything including history that does not conform to their groupthink. The BLM rampage to expunge British history by force is disgusting. Officials who pander to the mob and agree to tear down British history without public consultation should be removed from office. Both Daesh and the Chinese cultural revolution worked along the same lines as the angry BLM mob of today does.

History cannot be destroyed or re-written. It has to be viewed in the context of the period in which it occurred and what were the norms of that time. As time passes, hopefully we learn from the past and do our best to do better. This does not include removing statues and other references to persons who may be viewed differently today. If we continue down this route where does it stop. Museums and libraries would probably be next to come under scrutiny.

Monuments are part of our history. Removing them will not undo the past. They should remain and people learn from them so that any “perceived” wrongs of the past don’t happen again. However who are we to judge our historical figures by today’s standards.
