Conventional farming, hydroponics, and aquaponics, need to develop their own label . Educate the consumer of the attributes of these growing systems . We all want to be able to make informed, transparent, clearly defined choices.

These people claiming that "hydroponics don't belong in organics" are WRONG! I am am avid organics enthusiast and activist, and I feel that hydroponics are the future of farming. HYDROPONICS SHOULD BE ALLOWED in organics. And there shouldn't be a 3-yr transition period, that's absurd! Yes, sure, container growing with containers that sit on the ground need the 3 yr period, but not for pure hydroponic growing. These ridiculous people who insist organics have to be grown in soil are very uninformed! Please allow hydroponics to continue in organic and NO TRANSITION period is needed. Thank you.

We demand that the USDA follow the law as it is written in the Organic Food Production Act. We demand that the USDA stop certifying as organic all hydroponically-grown fruits and vegetables . This is being done to the advantage of huge corporations and at the expense of small family farmers and caring eaters. Today, cheaply-produced, non-organic food grown in industrial factories is flooding the market under the USDA organic label. As America loses the soil-based organic growers, they are losing the real alternative to the conventional-industrial production. Organic farming is based on building greater life in complex soil systems. It is not based on replacing all natural nutrition with fertilizers coming out of a bag. The USDA is damaging trust in the seal by allowing such produce to be called organic.

There has been a steady erosion of organic standards (sewage sludge on crops! irradiation!), and hydroponics is too divergent from the original goals, and is financed by some of the biggest corporations in growing and selling food. Yes, for 50 years I have wanted organic to become prevalent, but not on the unsustainable model of for-profit mega corporations. Rather, we need to get a lot more people back on the farm. Hydroponics will probably be a part of our future, but growing without soil isn't organic, let them form their own organization and educate the public as organic farmers have done.

After learning more, I now understand why some foods have made me sick. Don't list hydroponics as organic. Organics are safe for me, hydroponics are not! Please give them their own category as they are definitely not comparable! Total transparency in our foods is necessary and mandatory!

It is very concerning to me that glyphosate can be sprayed on hydroponics labeled as organic. How do I know what to buy and consume? I am new to this issue regarding the split in organic farming so I am still learning. I thought all organic products (including hydroponics) were free of pesticides.

Please make hydroponic a separate category. Consumers will determine if that's what they want. Organic should be organic. We need to build our soil and eat nutrients derived from it. We all need to have the freedom to choose and know what we are eating.

There has been a de facto coup d'état of the organic food movement. The OTA and USDA have spear headed and effectuated this course of events. Shall we irreparably compromise the health and well being of our nation's, our world's, people and environment so as not to cause confusion? I say no. These very concerns birthed the organic movement and it is our responsibility to nurture and protect our planet's soil (hence, food chain) so we may healthfully feed the world. We must not allow the fox (OTA-USDA) in sheep's clothing (Organic Certification) to pollute and destroy our food supply. GMO's, hydroponics, CAFO's. factory farming, etc., is not organic. No certification, organization, or words can make it organic. Lets continue to stand behind the truth and act. Lets stop participating in a system that is nothing more than a deadly charade. Lets also continue to publicize those farms and companies who have remained true to organic principles. We need to devote our dollars to supporting those who are the de jure providers of organic food. Thank you.
