USDA needs to relook, rework, and specify exactly what a hydroponically grown plant process needs to meet The Organic Food Production Act. Without precise guidelines and enforcement the public is being lied to through their labeling at the markets.

The problem is that food with only the USDA organic label is so well known not to pass true organic standards that the label is useless., and so people like me won't even consider buying it.

When I buy organic produce, I want to be sure that it has been grown in SOIL, not water, that has no chemicals added to it or has not been contaminated by any nearby chemicals. Produce grown in SOIL has more nutritional content and is better for the environment, since plants can regenerate soil.

How on earth can you have hydroponic vegetables listed as organic when there is no soil involved? Without nutrients derived from soil bacteria, fungae, and soil minerals, these things must be added artificially to the water. Hydroponics therefore must have their own status and their own set of labels for varying types of plant foods that are used. This is separate from soil grown crops which can be organic or not.

organic means utilizing natural processes instead of relying on chemical concoctions; hydroponics may reduce pesticide use but are not organic and should not be certified as such!

Hydroponically-grown food must be labelled as such in every instance. Plasticizers that are well known to leach from flexible plastic tubing, can migrate into the growth media they circulate. Plasticizers have no place in our food and especially not in any food labelled "ORGANIC." This NOP failure has the potential to damage 1) human health, 2) their own reputation, and 3) the reputation of Organic Standards by allowing the possibility of plasticizers to contaminate foods sold as "Organic."

We demand that the USDA follow the law as it is written in the Organic Food Production Act. We demand that the USDA stop certifying as organic all hydroponically-grown fruits and vegetables . This is being done to the advantage of huge corporations and at the expense of small family farmers and caring eaters. Today, cheaply-produced, non-organic food grown in industrial factories is flooding the market under the USDA organic label. As America loses the soil-based organic growers, they are losing the real alternative to the conventional-industrial production. Organic farming is based on building greater life in complex soil systems. It is not based on replacing all natural nutrition with fertilizers coming out of a bag. The USDA is damaging trust in the seal by allowing such produce to be called organic.

Our plants; fruits and vegetables should and need to be growing in soil. Soil contributes to the taste, nutritional content and is all around better for the environment to have plants growing and regenerating soil.

To consider hydroponics as organic is absurd and this sort of nonsense needs to stop right now. I expect the USDA to ban this practice immediately so that these sham produce growers are not allowed to continue with such deception.

I am tired of the way Trumps EPA & the USDA have lost track of their original mission.Its time to start protecting Americans from all the chemicals in our food again.
