Protect felines under the road traffic act, the same as canines etc. Isle of Man
Here on the Isle of Man felines are often knocked down on the road, many are left at the roadside dead, or injured and in excruciating pain by the people responsible. Recently we lost our family pet cat wookie, Thankfully we were reunited with him due to him being microchipped but with no explanations from the person responsible we are left with many questions. This makes the grieving period so much harder.
We live in a built up area of Douglas where there are many pets, children, disabled people and the elderly (Right next to crossroads care.). The speed limit is 30mph, yet we have seen & heard on many occasion people doing 45+mph.
I am writing this petition in hope to change the laws on running down a feline. I think they deserve as many rights as a canine (They are protected by the Road Traffic Act. Drivers must stop and give their details to the pet's owner or report the incident within 24 hours.)
It's not a matter of making it an offence but it could give closure to the family, or time for emergency care should the cat need it.
After being reported, cats should then be scanned so the owners can be notified. This in return will encourage responsible pet owning and micro-chipping.
Felines are just as much a part of the family as any canine. They are loved just the same, and their loss leaves heartbreak and emptiness to all who cared for them just the same. We need to gain justice for these poor creatures and prevent anyone else going through this experience. Please sign and help get these animals some rights. Thank you

The current level of support has prompted a meeting request with local officials to discuss the inclusion of felines under the Road Traffic Act. I am finalizing a formal briefing document to outline why mandatory reporting is a necessary legislative update. Updates regarding the outcome of this conversation will be provided here.

I have picked up a cat in the past that had been left in the road to die after being hit by a car. Thanks to a microchip his owner was found and she was thankful that I found and collected him. It should be reported. They are no different to dogs.
This sadly happened to my cat and she was left in the road to die in pain and alone. Drivers should be made to stop and take them to the nearest vet then report it to police. Also, I think all cats should microchipped.
My beautiful, loving, talkative cuddle bundle Theo was hit by a car and killed but two hours ago today. We brought him home from MSPCA just over four months ago. This is the second - and possibly third - such loss in the two years since we moved to the Island.
I hear lots of sad stories about families losing their cats found dead on the road, it's not righ. The law needs to change. The IOM is famous for the Manx cat so it makes sense to change the law to protect these animals
If people can’t have the human decency to report when they’ve run a cat down, then clearly we need some form of legal protection that means people have to, by law, respond to an incident properly.
Law needs to be put in

I can't believe this still isn't illegal. I saw my beautiful cat hit and run by a car this morning and then held her in my arms as she died. The woman was driving so fast and didn't even break but there is no way she didn't know she had hit something. Heartbreaking!
