Councillors are killing Ennis and Clare by increasing rates on businesses and ridiculously high parking rates. The town is deserted they are a disgrace.

Speaking as someone who lives in one of the most politically corrupt and fiscally bankrupt states (Illinois) and as a frequent Ennis visitor (read: tourist/consumer,) I am deeply disturbed to learn of this impending business fee increase. Ennis has a unique charm, largely due to the amount of small shops , pubs and cafes within a well-defined and walkable town area. Raising business fee rates, as business owners are barely staving off recession related deficits, is short-sighted and stagnant minded political decision making at its worst! You've lost many shops in recent years, leaving multiple storefronts empty, darkened and increasingly dingy. You'll lose even more shops by forcing this fee increase. Is it too difficult to understand that less shops equals less shoppers? Less shoppers equals less sales...less sales equals less profit...less profit equals less revenue. Ennis, with its medieval charm, and as situated so close to Shannon Airport and the heavily promoted Wild Atlantic Way, is uniquely suited towards a post-recession renaissance. However, if local council forces remaining shops to close, due to exhorbitant business operating fees, this renaissance opportunity will be lost. Ennis, as a town, will become a ghost town. And what then, of The Fleadh Down In Ennis? Seize this opportunity. Conduct town meetings, to gain citizens' input. Invite town business owners to a council meeting, to brainstorm and share ideas. Seek advice from towns which have managed to keep their shops open. Ennis has existed for hundreds of years. Don't let your generation's legacy be defined as the thick ones who killed off the town!

Couldn't agree more with you Mary well said but the sad reality is there are not any companies there anymore to give hundreds of job so the faster they wake up and realise this that the S.M.E.'s are the only employers in our Country and I must say the small businesses in our Town are great to have hung in there so far and I hope they continue to do so but of course when you don't get any support from local council it's a joke having the council then and a lot of money could be saved if only the council weren't so reckless in the way they spend it and I bet they have no wage cuts and we the taxpayers paying them. They have some nerve

We need to keep the SME's open so they can keep employment going. It is these that make the big difference to the ordinary people. If is only self employment or having a small workforce that is a huge impact on a community and those living in it. Will those who make these decisions give jobs to those who will be out of work if the SME's are forced to close. As far as I can see there is so much red tape that it isn't in favour of the small person they only want the company that will give hundreds of jobs so they can go for the photo shoot and to hell with the small person.
