Students hmm ? The minister seems to have misunderstood on which side of the table are the PhD candidates : they are teaching and writes papers, they are not student anymore.
The Sacrifice of responsability and autonomy of PhD candidates to save some money is a short-term calculation...

Being a bursary PhD is as complicated as being a contract one, except that we lacked social benefits, security, paid maternity leave or any other right. Let's not let the list get larger.

I am originally from Brazil and the conditions for PhD candidates in the Netherlands was one of the reasons I chose to do my PhD research there. Changing these conditions would be really bad for future PhD candidates in the Netherlands.

I'm still not sure what to think about this. Would the possibilities to find funding for your own research improve?

Removing the salary and treating PhD candidates just as normal student will decrease the educational competitiveness of Dutch university.

going backward to a student status is not only not recognizing the work your doctoral candidates do, but also going completely at the opposite of what quality assurance and the European Charte and Code state.

This is really an appalling and stupid "experiment". Leaving PhD candidates at an inferior status would not help improve the overall productivity of the students, only lead to a "mass production" of cheap education programs, ultimately harm the entire academia of NL.

This will disproportionately affect women, who are increasingly having children during their PhD research. This is contrary to the stated goals of the Netherlands to promote equal opportunities for women and increase the numbers of women in academia.

I worked in 2 countries where PhD candidates were students rather than employees and this affected very much their productivity and their life.

Saving cash by cutting down on people? There has bound to be a better way to save money. The economy might be tough at the moment, but this is definitely not the answer.

Promoveren is een full-time baan.

At my university in Sweden, they already have this system.. and they are actively abolishing it because it is unfair (no healthcare for example), exploitative, and uncertain (grant runs out? Tough luck!). Stop this nonsense from happening in the Netherlands!

Leave the experiments to the PhD students, please.
We strongly oppose the Dutch bursary experiment.
