Totally against this "experiment" as it is agains the PhD candidate and as well of the institution where he/she carries out his work given the new modality of just a student at that level of education and age.

When a PhD is not only an education but a considerable contribution to the university, and to the society in general, it should be recognised as such.. Reducing a PhD to just another education may well discourage prospective candidates, especially since a PhD takes 4 years of a prospective career, with the associated consequences for pensions, unemployment insurances, and the ability to buy a house.

The Netherlands have one of the best, if not the best, PhD-systems in the world, giving rise to excellent scientific publications and a extremely high quality of PhD-theses. Regarding PhD-candidates as employees, not students, is an essential prerequisite for this system to sustain.

Talented and motivated PhD students are the most driving and creative. Their current and future values are even under-estimated. Good salary makes them focus on research which will equip them to handle the future challenges of the country.

The condition under which I can do the PhD in the Netherlands was for me the reason to do it here and not in Germany, UK or Ireland

For an engineer there already is a large gap between industry and doing a PhD in terms of salary, meaning many talented students do not choose to pursue a degree. Do not make that gap any larger and further decrease the number of students that do choose to pursue their interests rather than go for a high salary.
