As all of us students agree, homework is a huge burden. The disproportionate amounts of homework are taking away students' free time, and along with that time, their happiness. The large amounts of homework, approximated as two and a half hours a night, can, because most students procrastinate, take all night with long term projects and other unfinished work. The homework takes away from the students' sleep and enthusiasm, causing them physical harm and exhaustion and making them less effective in school.

This is why our school should lower the amount of average homework in the Middle School as students are learning how to manage their homework.

The best way to fix this problem is not to make no homework, but to slightly reduce the amount of homework so that students can still learn from homework.

I believe that lowering the homework per class per night by ten minutes will lower the homework enough for kids to feel more free, but will also let them learn from homework. Having less homework will make them more enthusiastic for school and in class projects, and will learn more, as it is scientifically proven that people learn more when they have more sleep. Please sign this petition to reduce the homework in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade by 10 minutes a night per class!

Updates

May 30, 2014

I am currently compiling the feedback from students to format a formal proposal for the administration. This document will outline the specific impact of the current workload on our nightly sleep schedules. I expect to request a meeting with the department heads once the data is finalized.

May 30, 2014

The administration has acknowledged the petition and agreed to a meeting next week to discuss the specific ten-minute reduction proposal. I am currently finalizing a document that details the impact of current workloads on student sleep cycles to present during that discussion.

In 9th grade, teachers are like: "You can spare 40 minutes out of your night for my class" and students are like: "Some of us work slower than you. For us, that takes roughly an hour, then multiply that by 5 core subjects... That's your entire afternoon AND evening, down the drain..."

10 mins is about equal to none at all. Whil I see the advantages about cutting down to a # like that, It would have to be made up via longer school days or we'd lose time during the year. I'm much less worried by the time per subject than I am the amount of overlapping major assignments. Thats where all the problems start.

I usually start my homework at around 7 or 8 at night, and somehow end up finishing at about 11 or later. That just seems a bit off to me. I know that we're only supposed to do up to 30 min. of homework, but if I didn't finish and told a teacher, "Well, we're only supposed to do 30 min," I would probably have to make it up and fall even further behind. I think it is less of a question of lessening the time, but asking the teachers to further accept the present policy. I do, though, think that this would help quite a bit, though, so I will sign this. Maybe just try to make revisions and such with the feedback you get.

Hello all, We have been deceived. After talking to Mr. Barish, I learned that the rule has been changed to 25 minutes a night with a parent signature, and full credit! Luc
