We believe Music Education needs to be prioritized at Fernwood Montessori. It is the only curricular subject area mentioned in the potential budget strain scenarios. Music Education ought not be reduced, rather expanded to provide Fernwood students access to being part of curricular vocal and instrumental ensembles. Currently, Secondary students have no curricular or extra curricular opportunity to participate in a vocal ensemble or an instrumental ensemble that will easily transfer to high school ensemble experiences (i.e. instruments found in bands and orchestras). The prioritization of providing our students what is required by the Department of Public Education Music Policy ought not be on the table for reduction when, as it currently exists, is not in compliance. Please prioritize Music Education at Fernwood Montessori.

Cutting a truly beneficial (research has proven this countless times) service that is directly delivered to students is criminal and an indication inept leadership. Especially when there are millions of dollars wasted on standardized assessment, over saturated software access and Central Office admin.

It is shameful that Fernwood students only have music one time per week. It is shocking and profoundly disappointing Fernwood does not have a traditional band option for its students.

Music education , as well as all arts , are critical for all children. Music changed my life, it’s how I’ve raised my four children, and it’s saving my life as I battle Parkinson’s disease. Please do MORE than the minimum to support music education

I had access to curricular choir fully through my K-12 experience. Band and Orchestra were offered beginning in 5th grade. Access and opportunity matter. Every child should have the opportunity to participate on campus, during school hours, and without additional cost.
