As a parent of a student who has been in TDSB public schools over the last 8+ years, I am very shocked when I read the recommendations of the Enhancing Equity Task Force Report. I cannot even believe that the report actually recommends phasing out the specialized programs such as IB, TOPS and MaCS etc, in order to enhance “equity”.
We live in a highly competitive world; today’s students at TDSB will compete in a global market when they grow up. These specialized programs will better prepare our young generation for future technology advances and challenges, which are the major driving forces for the future. Eliminating these programs will hurt TDSB students, and eventually hurt our economy. Equity does not mean to put a brake on those hard working and dedicated students. Instead, we should expand these successful specialized programs in TDSB.

Closing arts and specialty programs will hinder the growth of kids and their abilities to create and experience new ways of thinking. Quite frankly, this is the worst idea in the history of bad ideas.

The gifted program and arts programs at TDSB schools have been vital in shaping who I am today. To say that it is not fair to all students is to equate "equity" with "equality". Just as you do not eliminate running in gym class to be "fair" to people in wheelchairs, some students thrive in an arts environment that could otherwise struggle or become disinterested or disengaged in a standard school. I know first hand that the gifted program helps to satiate students' needs for learning who, often bored by the curriculum alone, would become disruptive in class or otherwise act out. To eliminate these programs would be such a huge, huge mistake and I cannot believe it is even being proposed.

TDSB is so fortunate to be able to offer such opportunities. People who attend other boards often covet our special programs. Why would we provide fewer opportunities to reach kids and help them learn?

If I didn't go to an arts school I would have ended up in a very bad place, the arts are my life and livelihood and the skills I learned there are still with me today over 20yrs later. Please keep these wonderful institutions!

Specialized schools are an outlet for some people. They might not a able to afford specialized classes so having the opportunity to have them in school mostly with no cost is very important. These schools can not go away.

As an AP student I believe that the tdsb must refrain from this unintelligent move. Due to the ap program I have learned many things above my grade level and I was amongst kids where learning and success were our main priorities. Overall, I know ap has allowed me to be surrounded with not only likeminded individuals but it has separated me from all the foolishness that tends to happen in academic and applied classes. Not to mention ap is what allowed my cousin a 4.0 gpa in first year university. Please refrain from removing these loved programs as they have allowed for much success in our highschool students.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. To take away what works for the kids and go backwards in life? instead of ruining kids minds by taking away how they learn through specialized programs in high school maybe the TDSB needs to learn how to implement proper learning in the grade school level. Focus on the young kids learning and leave specialized programs alone. IF IT'S NOT BROKEN DONT FIX IT!
