Specialized academic programs have changed my life, and the lives of many students I know. Without optional attendance, I would not have been able to access these incredible resources. Spreading them out across the city would not be as effective in terms of student enjoyment and success.

Jurisdictions like British Columbia have found that specialized programs-ones that all kids have access to, just not in their home catchment, is effective and equitable. More research needed. Organizers: this idea is only an idea from a consultation. Don’t blow it out of proportion and make all of these young and vulnerable kids anxious about their school closing.

Toronto's public schools have always offered all students an education that is comparable to private schools, in terms of quality, resources and specialized programs. It appears that the TDSB is now considering taking this away. These changes, proposed in the name of equity, will ultimately have an opposite result by creating a public system that depresses all schools to the lowest common denominator. Toronto will now have a clearly defined, two tier education system. Those students whose families can afford a private education will enjoy the benefits of specialized programs and resources that foster the best possible education. This will leave an inferior public system for those without the wealth to attend private schools. This proposal by the TDSB will be a step towards a class system that deprives certain children of the opportunities that should be available to all children in Toronto. It is sad to see attempts to erode these fundamental Canadian values that have been recognized and promoted by the public school system in Toronto for generations.

Specialized art programs are very important to many people in our society. Taking it away could make their lives change negatively.

I knew that the tdsb was dumb, but I didn't think they were this dumb. Clearly someone on the board just couldn't handle their special snowflake kid not getting into a special school so they need to ruin it for everybody. Grow a pair, tdsb.

so much commitment has been put towards these programs and many students enjoy the optional attandance as it allows them to see what many high schools have to offer!

I went to Claude Watson and would be so sad to see it go. It changed my life and gave me opportunities to learn in a way I desperately needed at that time in my life.

Being in a specialized program for 6 years of my life, I see no reason that the TDSB should close them down in the name of “equity” or even “equality”. Shouldnt students get the chance to explore the gifts they were born with in their teengae lives? Why should the students who worked so hard to achieve something such as a specialized program have to suffer for students who didn’t get accepted? If anything I think the TDSB should implement more programs thats more suitable for students who wasn’t accepted initially to programs such as MACS and Claude Watson. This will create more equity in the school system, and provide a better learning environment for the students in their middle-highschool years. Thank you for your consideration.

The removal of specialized programs downgrades the broadening of fields, something crucial to experiencing the fields of Biomed, Chem, Physics (etc.)
