It would be highly irresponsible to cancel these outstanding specialized programs that the Tdsb should be so proud of. More can and needs to be done for equity in our system but canceling such outstanding programs is throwing out the baby with the bath water.

Going to Etobicoke School Of The Arts, I’ve learned so much about who I am and who I aspire to be through the arts and constantly being surrounded by creatives. Specialized programming is SO IMMPORTANT in creating safe environments for everyone.

The TDSB can not possible get rid of all the individuality that students have. Kids including myself have found a place where they belong and actually connect with and they cannot take that away.

I had the great fortune of working for and with the faculty and students of this program for years in the local theatre, and it would be a huge blow to the general arts community in the GTA to lose such a rich and valued program. I agree that there should be more access to arts in all schools, but it makes no sense to remove a successful, specialized program, in favour of mildly enriching other schools for a short time - to throw away years of investment and development, while making a half-hearted attempt to restore token pieces of decades of arts cuts in schools, is irresponsible. Save the program and invest in more like it.

The reason there are schools like these is because local school don’t have that program. For example ESA has 6 programs that aren’t in local schools and if they shut them down then the students will never be able to take those courses again.

This is completely foolish and not thought out in any way. When I think of the thousands of students I have taught and who have benefited from a specialized arts education and are enhancing the arts world and indeed many professions with their creativity and ingenuity I am appalled and frankly shocked that the suggestion to get rid of them has even been considered. Please reconsider

TDsB needs to remember the communities they serve , the communities that pay the taxes for their services and who the real clients are.

Special programmes feed the learning desires of students who become more motivated in studying a particular area. Schools like ESA (Etobicoke School of the Arts) transform this student enthusiasm into important skills sets- managing time across a full curriculum plus major, exploring and taking risks in problem solving, using creativity to enhance problem solving. If you have any doubts you should visit such schools to witness the solidarity in hard learning executed by the teachers, staff and students. As well, ESA is not populated by wealthy or privileged students- all are welcome and they are enhancing recruitment of diverse students to ensure all have access to this education. If schools need more funding across the board then we should lobby the government to provide it-- not to break programmes that are excelling and producing our next generation of creative leaders.

I attended Claude Watson School for the Arts and it made a huge difference in my life and career. I am a choreographer based in Brussels, Belgium. Please keep specialized programs in schools, you are forming the next generation of artists that will take the stage on the local, national and international level.
