Ann,
NOT a single confederate EVER died in Huntsville fighting for the Confederacy! NOT a single ONE!
There is simply NO confederate heritage here in downtown Huntsville to "protect"! And there NEVER was!
Any stories of confederates fighting on the courthouse square is PURE FICTION!

What so-called "history" are you afraid of erasing? There is NO confederate history to erase here at the courthouse! NONE!
I know that you do not realize the FACT that Huntsville DID NOT participate in the Civil War! There were NEVER any confederate soldiers defending the Courthouse in Huntsville! Not a single one! NOT EVER!
The Northern Industrialists who were the Merchants of Huntsville INVITED General Sherman to camp in Huntsville and asked the General to spare Huntsville from being burned and pillaged as the Merchants did not support the confederacy! Huntsville was spared and NO ONE IN nor NEAR Huntsville fought against General Sherman! That is FACT! So, you see, there never was any legitimate reason to put a confederate statue here in the first place! The statue is misleading and historically INACCURATE!

I have never understood WHY we have a confederate monument on the Downtown Huntsville courthouse considering the FACT that NO CONFEDERATES EVER fought there! NONE!
Not a single, solitary confederate EVER fought to protect Huntsville NOR the courthouse!
NO SUCH THING EVER HAPPENED!
Huntsville was occupied by General Sherman's Union Army during most of the Civil War at the INVITATION of the Huntsville Merchants who were Northern Industrialists and DID NOT SUPPORT the Confederacy!
I ask AGAIN, WHY do we NEED a statue of a confederate soldier standing where NO CONFEDERATE SOLDIER EVER FOUGHT NOR EVEN STOOD!
The very presence of this statue is misleading and historically INACCURATE!
This statue should be relocated to the site of an ACTUAL CIVIL WAR BATTLE!! There were NONE fought in Huntsville. PERIOD.
There is NO historic justification for keeping it here on the square! NONE WHATSOEVER!

The Battle Flag has no place over state buildings. The Confederate Monuments are NOT the same. They are part of our history, especially since it has been there over 100 years. I am not a racist. But I did have a great great great grandfather in the Civil War. I love the south, I believe in civil rights for all. Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive.

The flag needs to come down but I do not see why the monument needs to be removed.

I think it is ridiculous all the controversy over the confederate flag and its history. This is a part of our past, present, and future and nothing can change that.
