Open Letter from the Rochester, NY Community
Dear President Trump,
As citizens and members of the community of Rochester, New York, we stand together to “Welcome the Stranger” and unite our voices as you consider the Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions.
We implore you to raise the number of refugees that will be allowed into our country for next fiscal year to 75,000. During this time of historic global levels of forcibly displaced people please consider our sincere desire to express compassion to the vulnerable as you set the ceiling on Refugee Admissions for next year.
Rochester, NY has a robust structure for welcoming refugees that utilizes the excellent medical, educational and employment opportunities available in our city. This structure of services and agencies are fully supported by our non-profit, business, education and faith communities as we give both of our time and money. We are compelled to respond to this global crisis as an expression of our values and are asking our government to enable us to continue.
Finally, we want to assure you that we value our system of government and continue our support for you and others in positions of power and influence in our governments.

As a first generation American I am grateful that my mother was welcomed to this country for a much better life. As a nation of immigrants, we MUST continue to welcome and help those less fortunate and those escaping oppression. Please let the refugees enter this great country as Lady Liberty has taught us to do.
Having worked with Saints Place and Catholic Family Center in resettling refugees for 7 years, I've seen the great gifts they bring and offer our community. Please raise the number of refugees allowed to escape terrible conditions, begin a new life here, contribute to the strength of our nation and to continue living the promises of our forebearers.
Over 70 million people are displaced worldwide, 25.9 million of whom are refugees and 1.44 million of whom are in need of resettlement in 2020, making the global refugee crisis the worst in human history. We must welcome those feeling violence and persecution. There is no higher moral obligation than to save the life of another.
Please increase the number of refugees. They have helped make the Rochester, NY area a vibrant community, and they are great neighbors! We cannot turn our back on those fleeing war. We fought the Nazis, but left millions of Jews to perish at their hands. We learned once. Never again.
I help the refugee population in Rochester learn English and prepare for citizenship. Their courage and determination is inspiring. Our community is so much richer because of their presence. Please allow us to continue to enrich our world.

As a first generation American I am grateful that my mother was welcomed to this country for a much better life.
