Preserve Traditional Grading at Camas High School

I support the traditional standards to ensure our kids are ready for college

I saw my child struggle and have heard of many more who have with the transition from standards based grading in MS to traditional in HS. Under no circumstances should a student have to make that transition when they go to college. As the parent if a HS student (and 2 more to come) and an educator's family, as well as the friend and family member of several local teachers, I believe and trust the teachers when they say this is bad for students. Please hear us!

The current standards based grading system is a complete failure. Please return to traditional grading in middle schools and keep it out of our high schools!

This proposal is a hard sell. To do so would require a long campaign with research-based statistics. And it’s not enough to point to some lone high school who is the only one out there experimenting and jeopardizing their kids’ futures.

I am strongly opposed to using a new grading system. It had been a disaster at the middle school level. The doctoral school I attended had to stop using this system after it was a failure there and almost caused their accreditation to be pulled. If this is implemented CSD will lose more trident, which it can not afford to do. Mine will be three of them.

I am not happy with the current standard grading system in the camas middle schools and will not send my kids to camas HS as this seems to be the direction of the district.

The proposed shift to Standards-Based Grading (SBG) represents a significant change that could greatly impact our students. I believe it’s important to clarify what specific issues this change aims to address. As a parent, my experience with SBG at Skyridge has been largely negative, with the system acting as a demotivator for many students. Expanding this approach to the high school level raises concerns about its broader effects on student engagement and performance. Additionally, I am deeply concerned about how students graded under SBG will transition to college, where traditional grading systems are still the norm. Before moving forward, I urge the district to engage parents more transparently, providing comprehensive information and creating opportunities for genuine collaboration and input.

Our children’s future is too important to risk with untested practices.

An unproved method of evaluating our children’s success is not what’s best for our children and is taking a risk with the future leaders of our community.

This will weaken students preparedness for college along with CHS’ reputation for being a strong academic high school. I urge you not to consider this new grading system.

The primary reason we afford to live in Camas is an excellent school system which provides a "leg up" as they reach adulthood. Changing the methodology for grading will put our children at a disadvantage as they will need to explain and quantify for their next step when their transcripts are in a non standard form as they approach whatever the next step is.

Don't dumb it down and shortchange our kids

We would enroll elsewhere if this is passed.
