Redesigning the entire CMM program has left a very sour taste in the mouths of members. The decision by MPI to essentially dilute the significance of the Certification in Meeting Management (CMM) will result in the reduction of qualified individuals receiving the designation, thus the reduction of weight it and ANY OTHER CERTIFICATION related to the Industry may hold. Designations are designed to be given to a specific group of people who fulfill specific criteria, have specific experience and backgrounds, a desire to elevate their knowledge and standing and can successfully complete a specialized assessment related to the aforementioned. Many CMPs/CMMs are not involved in decisions related to business travel arena. The GBTA in and of itself is a highly esteemed and recognized organization, welcoming individuals who are involved in the area of business travel. The Association should have been encouraged to offer its own certification without involvement from MPI, which has created its own niche in the Meetings Industry. If nothing else, MPI should have informed its members of the notion of modifying the CMM designation PRIOR to actually executing the change. I shall continue my affiliation with Meeting Professionals International as it offers myriad resources for and a great network of like-minded, like-experienced individuals. If I wish to become involved in business travel, I shall look to the GBTA for the same.

1. Retain the 10-year experiential requirement for eligibility and acceptance 2. Rescind the honorary CMM credentials awarded to SMMC designees in January 2014. SMMC designees may earn the CMM designation by meeting the 10-year requirement and submitting a business plan or completing the new program at a reduced rate. 3. Restore the Certificate in Meeting Management acronym and explanation regarding the program’s original stature and requirements on www.mpiweb.org 4. If the above changes cannot be incorporated, it is requested that the new MPI/GBTA program use a name other than “CMM” Respectfully submitted, Michael Soehner

MPI you really messed up here!! Please reconsider your proposed changes to the CMM program. I worked hard to obtain the CMM designation and strongly feel it is being devalued. 10 years experience in the industry requirement is important as it shows commitment and maintains senior level collaboration.

Please reconsider some of the announced changes to the CMM program. I was in the Nov. 2012 class and found it an important step in the startup process of my current new company. I'm not sure why such radical changes are needed?

Seeking the CMM was at the top of my goal list for 2009. I lost my wonderful position at a Fortune 500 company at the height of the Great Recession starting off 2009 without a job. In April I unpacked the boxes from my office at there, at the top of my framed 2009 Goals, "Achieve the CMM." Hmm. No job, great expense. But my passion told me that whatever it takes I'm going to achieve the CMM. The expense was overwhelming but through resourcefulness, scholarships and valuable expense to one unemployed I made the commitment. I had to jump through a number of hoops to overcome other obstacles, even after arriving being moved from my original group to another after I had invested time connecting. And through each of these challenges I learned, I grew. These are outside of the hills I climbed to earn the priviilege to even be accepted into the program. Mine is but one example of the incredible years of work, dedication, passion and sacrifice it took to get to the program and through the program. To accept anything less is to devalue the designation not only of those who have earned it or those who will earn it in the future but to the entire industry. I ask that decision makers carefully consider the impact of this decision and how it could void the years of work taken to bring our industry to a professional level with other industries. Thank you for your consideration.

As someone who has recently been considering seeking the CMM, I can say that these developments have made me seriously reconsider going for the designation. Before, I was sure about the prestige of the certificate, and had large respect for what was involved to achieve it. Now, I'm left to wonder if the value of the CMM would be "cheapened" by combining it with another designation AND lessening the application requirements. If I were a current CMM holder, I would be very disturbed to hear this, and would feel that my designation was devalued. Please listen to the voices of the professionals that have been a part of your organization for so long, and make up the essence of what MPI is. We just want to maintain the integrity of the designation and the brand, and along with that, the industry itself.

I am not in favor of the changes outlined by MPI; and, fully support the modifications requested by my CMM peers. In an effort to obtain the highest-level certification in the industry, I produced an eighty-page strategic business plan, which I deem to be at a graduate school course level. In addition, the huge amount of time and great expense was palpable. I suggest that MPI/GBTA consider renaming the new offering, as it address’ a different audience and the lack of parity between the curriculums is apparent.

I'm completely disappointed in this entire process. In my view point we need to start with new management at MPI, this is not the way to treat your most dedicated group of professionals. I know this is going to effect membership among a lot of companies that I have discussed with.

I proudly earned the CMM designation last year and am very disheartened to see the proposed changes to this certification which I believe diminishes this accomplishment for me and for others who devoted so much of our time and energy to achieve this level of professional development. I object to the proposed changes in their entirety.
