Please preserve the Chinese language. Please keep Mrs. Ong as the Chinese teacher at Ridgecrest. We come from an English only household and my son has learned so much from her and really enjoys her class too!

I'm extremely surprised to hear PVPUSD, a well known, wonderful district, is cutting Chinese while other public school districts are trying to increase Chinese language arts (starting in elementary) or even adding other language programs. We want our next generation to reach the goal of being bilingual and biliterate in the 21st century.

Here's a solution to funding the district wide language program. Reduce the head count of one administrator at the Malaga Cove district office and redeploy resources to the language program. This is a win - win because we would be getting rid of someone who does nothing to a program that has positive results in the classroom.

Middle school is a great time to learn Mandarin Chinese. Students’ cognitive skills are strong enough to grasp a non-alphabetic language and their speaking is still flexible enough that they get the tones right. Your child will be able to understand some conversations and read some signs in shops and restaurants, not just in the classroom. The great majority of Ridgecrest students who signed up for Chinese in 6th grade chose to stay in Chinese for all three years because they enjoyed the class. So please, encourage every kid you know to enroll in Chinese next year. It is a rewarding experience.
