Mrs. Pemberton does so much for our students. We have so many students who are first time college students - she works so hard for them.

Our motto this year has been “Enroll, enlist, employ” and yet we are literally getting rid of the person who helps our students achieve those goals. Most of our students are first generation college students so they don’t have parents who can help assist in the application process. We are doing them a great disservice by not offering them this assistance through the school. This is a case of how equal does not mean equitable. HSHS needs this!

The east end schools need to keep the college advisor position more than other schools. Henrico County speaks of equity and then they take away the thing our students in the east end need. Students at HSHS are less likely to have parents who have attended college and therefore need more guidance with applications, scholarships, FASFA, and just college decisions in general.

The Highland Springs High School College Career Center is an essential component of preparing young teens for life after school and being knowledgeable post-secondary options. Without this resource, many students wouldn’t have been aware of the opportunities for them to succeed after graduation, or even know what’s available for them after graduation. The invaluable staff provide the tools to help students plan their next steps. From my personal experience, I would not have known as much about applying for colleges, meeting college representatives, completing admissions/scholarship applications, organizing a resume, and setting goals to move out of my comfort zone. To remove such a pivotal component of a high school student’s pathway to adult life and success would be a tragic mistake. Keep the College and Career Center!
