No teacher-student relationships? Might as well have robots teach the students.

I have gone to many teachers with problems and they are very responsive and have been able to really help me. I don't know what I would have done without some of their guidance.

As an alumnus I find this policy to be absurd. I am happy that my children are not in the district.

It doesn't make sense to me that student aren't allowed to talk to their teachers about personal issues. Doing this completely takes away the personal aspect of learning which will make kids grow up not knowing how to talk people.

We have 5 children , 3 have graduated and 2 remain in this district. All of our children's lives have been enriched by the relationship/ friendships formed with trusted teachers in this district. The relationships have always been professional and human. I am certain the cold robotic behavior outlined in this policy would never lead to such relationships. We are teaching our children to be responsible human beings, Human beings should be teaching them or we will fail them.

Grew up and graduated from Hershey; the school district is crazy to think any of those teachers would harm a child at DTSD.

This is a disgrace. Even past my HHS days, I still wish to keep the connections I've made with my old teachers.

Teachers know their students well because they interact daily. Not having any sort of knowledge of the students can impact how students interact and trust the teachers. And how can you learn from someone if you don't trust them?

I think my best relationships are the ones I still have today with my past teachers I see in the grocery store after living here over 20 years. You should have to live in this district as an admistrator to understand how we feel.

This policy will remove any connection between students and teachers. For teachers to properly mentor us and inspire us to do our best, we need to be able to have a connection between our students and teachers.

As a retired teacher, many students need someone to talk too. Frequently that becomes the teacher. What a shame to have to watch your words so carefully!

I am a current teacher who has nothing to do with Hershey High School. I just think this policy is ridiculous. This is 2016- in 2016 we teach the WHOLE child. 49% of children experience some form of trauma before the age of 5 (regardless of SES or demographics). These traumatic experiences negatively impact a person's ability to learn throughout their whole lives. Because of this, it is crucial for teachers to create trauma-sensitive classrooms in order to set up students for as much success as possible. The first step is to build a sense of trust between the teacher and his or her students. Without trust, there is no sense of safety. Without safety, there is no learning.

If not for the personal relationships I formed with a few of my teachers at HHS, I would not be the person I am today. Restricting students from sharing personal thoughts/feelings/problems from their teachers is ridiculous. If you don't trust teachers to be alone with their students and to offer hem advice during, what is for most high school students, a very difficult time period, then you shouldn't have hired that person as a teacher.

This is simple minded nonsense! The relationship between a teacher and a student can make or break a child, adolescent, youth. Sometimes the bond between a student and mentor (teacher) is a lifeline and directing the student to a counselor when trust has been established and not so easy to come by, is rather absurd. What is broken that the school board feels needs fixed? What is it that is not being told? Is it simply administrative bullying and power play? We might consider having students in a room with an instructor on a screen to help prevent building the age old, tried and true student teacher rapport.
