For as long as I can remember our Beautiful Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet Il. has No "Handi Cap" Parking Spots available to the Public. I realize the Rialto has No actual Parking lot.

But, Surley we could give up one or two Public Parking Spots for disabled individulas. I have brought this before the Joliet City Council recently, asking them to PLEASE make one or two of the Parking Spots on Van Buren Street adjacent to the Rialto Square Theatre designated for those with Disabilities, to be "Handi Cap" Parking Spots. (I believe they are thinking about helping us !!!)
So many people that attend the Rialto for Shows, Movies and Meetings, just like myself, have disabilities.
I have to come one hour prior to any Show, Meeting or Movie to TRY and get a Parking Spot. I have to sit in my car and wait that hour for the doors to open at the Theatre.
Yesterday my patience ended. I arrived At the Theatre, and Every single Parking Spot on Van Buren was covered with a red cover stating "NO PARKING".

I realize that Downtown Joliet is always pressed for Parking, but if we are going to revive the downtown and focus on the Theatre, we need to also include Handi Cap people like myself, other family members, friends, and aquaintances.

Updates

September 16, 2016

The feedback I have received from many of you confirms that the current parking situation at the Rialto prevents people from enjoying the theater the way they should. I am continuing to communicate with city officials to ensure they understand that accessibility needs to be a priority for our downtown area.

Seeing this progress confirms that the need for accessible parking at the Rialto is felt by many more people than I initially imagined. This growing momentum reinforces the fact that inclusion should be a fundamental expectation for our community venues. We are moving toward a necessary conversation about how public space serves everyone.

Long overdue and I would think the city is not in compliance with the US Department of Justice-Americans with Disabilitites Act -Accessible Parking Title II and Title III. Hopefully, the Joliet City Council will address this ASAP!

With a simple fix (new signage), this problem would be solved. Make it a priority!
